Sports Medicine

Sports and Exercise Medicine is one of the newest medical specialities in Australia and as such is often not known about. The Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians was founded in 1985 but only gained speciality status in 2009. In total there are 156 Sports & Exercise Medicine Physicians in all of Australia and New Zealand – a rare breed!

Sports Physicians are specifically trained in the diagnosis and management of all musculoskeletal problems. We are trained to be able to give patients evidence-based management for all conditions and are experts in being able to advise when surgery or non-operative treatment is the best plan. We treat acute (recent) and chronic (long-term) injuries. We are the leading speciality in making accurate diagnosis so patients can avoid unnecessary or less than ideal rehabilitation programs or surgery.

In addition to injury assessment and treatment, we are trained in assessing and treating multiple medical conditions which may affect patient’s exercise (such as exercise-induced asthma and exercise-related cardiac conditions) as well as providing exercise prescriptions for patients who wish to simply become healthier or want to know how to exercise safely (such as diabetes, obesity, osteoarthritis, pregnant ladies). We are also able to screen athletes to look for potential issues before you start exercising to minimise the chance of serious problems such as sudden cardiac death.

We are also able to provide detailed advice on altitude medicine, diving medicine, heat illness (treatment and prevention), hydration strategies, nutrition (weight loss, gaining muscle), supplements and on anti-doping regulations.

Throughout our training we provide medical care for elite teams, the general public and amateur athletes and publish cutting edge research. We pride ourselves in being patient advocates and spending time with our patients to truly understand their problems.

I hope that you have the opportunity to benefit from the unique skill set we possess.
